Suspected cable vandal electrocuted in Delta

A suspected electric cable vandal has been electrocuted in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State.   The incident happened about 3:00am on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Ogbe Quarters in Ute-Okpu Kingdom.    Residents of the agrarian community woke up to discover a lifeless body dangling from a twin electric pole located at a 33 KVA transformer by the popular Afor market, Ute- Okpu.   The residents were reportedly alerted by a young boy who sighted the body while on his way to the next village.   A resident, who simply gave his name as John, said but for the boy, nobody was aware that something was amiss.   “We were alerted by a young boy who was going to the next village. We never knew that somebody was hanging up there. We didn’t go anywhere today because of the rainfall. Man stabs his brother to death in fight over a 13-year-old girl

A man has killed his brother during a fight over a 13-year-old girl in Cameroon.    According to local media, the incident occurred last weekend in Mbagassina Subdivision in Mbam and Kim Division of the Center Region of Cameroon but the photos and information only circulated days after, because of absence of connectivity in the area.   It was gathered that the two brothers engaged in a bloody fight over the young girl who is barely a teenager.   “One of the brothers (the deceased) claimed the girl was his girlfriend. He had been suspecting his brother had something to do with his girlfriend because of their closeness,” Gildas, a witness told a journalist on Thursday, July 6.    “Before the fight started, one of the brothers had searched for the girl to no avail only to pass by the road and met her with the brother. The Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Court, sitting at the Chief Magistrate's Court, Awka, has remanded a brothel owner, Mrs. Ekpereamaka Okonkwo, 39, and her husband, Okechukwu Okonkwo, 36, for allegedly using underage girls for prostitution purposes in Oba, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.    LIB  reported  that the woman was arrested last week after Oba youths  raided  her brothel for allegedly using underage girls as sex workers. About nine victims, including three girls aged 13, and some others not older than 19, were found in the brothel.    She escaped to Asaba, Delta State and later sent her husband to bribe the Commissioner for Women's Affairs and Children's Welfare, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, with the sum of N300,000, to enable her return to business.    The Commissioner played along, accepted the money and asked her husband to bring her for settlement. Gunmen kill two women, injure others in Plateau communities

Gunmen suspected to be Fulani militias attacked the Kwahas and Millet communities in Ruff Kombun District, Mangu local government area of Plateau State, killing two women.   Three other persons who sustained gunshot wounds during the attacks are currently receiving medical treatment.   According to the Nigerian Tribune, the gunmen, who have been causing terror in the council, struck Kwahas around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, and indiscriminately opened fire on residents. A woman named Nancin Luka was killed instantly, and two other individuals were injured in the attack.    Mr. Adamu Luka, a resident of the community, stated that the gunmen were passing through Mangu to Bokkos road when they suddenly halted at Kwahas and began shooting at those in the vicinity. Angry residents descend on two suspected motorcycle snatchers in Benue

Angry residents have descended on two suspected motorcycle thieves, beating them with stones in Benue State.     It was gathered that the suspects were caught while trying to snatch motorcycles from the owners at Gyado villa in Makurdi on Thursday afternoon, July 6, 2023.     Details of the incident are still sketchy at the time of filing this report but some residents of the city who posted the photos, called on the police to rescue the suspect from the angry mob.   

Court remands man for allegedly stealing 2-month-old baby in Bayelsa

A Magistrate Court sitting in Yenagoa has ordered that a 30-year-old man, Kingsley Solomon, be remanded at the correctional centre in Okaka, for allegedly stealing a two-month-old baby at Azikoro Town in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.   Solomon was arraigned by the Bayelsa State Police Command before Magistrate Sarah B.I Avoh on two count charge of assault and child stealing.    The prosecution alleged that Solomon on June 23, 2023, on IYC Road, Azikoro, gave one Joy Lucky a punch on the left side of her eyes with the intent to steal her child and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 282 of the Criminal Code of Bayelsa State 2006.    The prosecution further told the court that Solomon on June 24, 2023, on IYC Road, Azikoro, stole a baby, Success Alfred, aged two months, the baby of Joy Lucky and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 298 (a) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap C14, of Bayelsa State 2006.   The First Information Rep

Rape: Visually impaired man remanded for allegedly defiling 13-year-old girl

A visually impaired man, Francis Ugachukwu, has been remanded at Kirikiri Correctional Centre for allegedly defiling a 13-year-old girl.    Ugachukwu was arraigned on one count charge of defilement and had pleaded not guilty. Lagos state counsel, Ms Abimbola Abolade, said the defendant committed the offence in November 2022, at No. 16 Kareem Giwa St., Abule-Osun, Ojoo in Lagos.   The offence contravened the provisions of Section 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.   Ruling on the case, Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court remanded the defendant at a correctional facility, pending hearing and filing of his bail application.   Soladoye adjourned the case until October 18 for hearing of bail application and commencement of trial.

Court remands man for allegedly sodomising 14-year-old boy in Adamawa

A 45-year-old man, Sani Salihu, was remanded in prison custody by Chief Magistrate Court I for allegedly sodomising a 14-year-old boy in Adamawa State.    The court presided over by Magistrate Alheri Ishaku Salihu, heard that Salihu, of Jippu Jam in Yola South LGA, lured the boy into a nearby bush, threatened him with a pair of scissors, and abused him sexually.    During the defendant’s arraignment, the police prosecutor, Inspector Zakka Musa, claimed that Salihu, a businessman,  penetrated the boy through  the anus on June 24, 2023, after brandishing the scissors he threatened to use if he refused.   The boy’s father, a resident of Modire Ward of Yolde Pate in Yola South LGA, reported the incident to the police on June 27, 2023.   The defendant, who was charged with a ‘unnatural offence’ under Section 263 of the penal code, pleaded not guilty to the charge.   The Magistrate adjourned the case to 20th July, 2023, for further mention, and asked that the defendant be remande

An Ekiti State Chief Magistrates’ Court, Ado Ekiti District, has ordered the remand of a man, Olasunkanmi Olowoyeye, and a 23-year-old woman, Adejoke Adegbite, over accusations of killing Adegbite’s husband, Matthew Akinsulie, in the state. Magistrate Dolapo Kay-Williams, who ordered the two defendants to be remanded to the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ado Ekiti, pending issuance of legal advice by the Director of Public Prosecutions, adjourned the matter till August 7, 2023, for mention. The charge against the defendants read, “That Olowoyeye and Adegbite on June 26, 2023, at Ogotun Ekiti, reasonably suspected to have committed an offence of conspiracy to murder and murder of Akinsulie.” The offences were said to be “contrary to Sections 244 and 234 of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021.” The police prosecutor, Inspector Sadiq Adeniyi, said the deceased’s father, in his statement to the police, explained that Adegbite was his late son’s wife, adding that Olowoyeye wa

Two abducted as gunmen k!ll volunteer guard in Benue

An officer of Benue State Volunteer Guards (BSCVG) has been shot d£ad by gunmen believed to be bandits.   The gunmen also abducted two people in Ugba rural town of Logo Local Government Area of the state. Eyewitnesses told Daily Trust that the incident occurred on Monday, July 3, around 3pm.   The two people kidnapped by the gunmen include the Principal of Ugondo College in Ugba, Abraham Yangeve popularly known as Spaco and the wife of a proprietor of Gifted Nursery and Primary School in Ugba.   The gunmen reportedly drove their car to the town, carted away two other cars and an undisclosed amount of money as well as telephone handsets from customers at Dex Joint situated close to Izupet filling station where they also robbed their victims.   The volunteer guard was shot at a checkpoint where he and his colleagues mounted a roadblock to prevent the gunmen from escaping. He was rushed to the General Hospital in Ugba where he was confirmed dead. 

Nine illegal refining sites uncovered in Bayelsa state

A total of nine illegal refineries sites with a combined total daily production estimated to be more than one million barrels per day (bpd), have been uncovered in three communities in Bayelsa State.   The illegal refineries were uncovered by security operatives who are carrying out a “war" against crude oil theft and illegal refineries in the Niger Delta region.   The illegal refineries commonly called ‘Kpofire’ in local parlance in the state were uncovered in Okordia, Zarama, Biseni in Yenagoa Local Government Area, and the boundary communities of Ibelebiri and Otuege(Agba) in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.   The Spokesman and Mobilisation Officer of Daven Oil and Security Enterprises, Comrade Okardi Yogo confirmed the development while speaking to reporters at the site of one of the busted illegal refineries located 8 kilometres inside the swamp forest of Zarama Clan   He said nine sites have so far been uncovered during the operation.

Akwa Ibom man shoots dead his only son during argument

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested one Aniekan James for allegedly killing his only son, Odudu James, 35.   The state Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi, disclosed this at the weekend while parading the suspect along with 268 others arrested for various offences.    The CP said the suspect was arrested on June 16, 2023, by operatives of the Ukanafun Division.   According to the police boss, Aniekan had killed several people in Lagos and Abia states.   “On June 16, 2023, one Aniekan James of Ikot Ndot village in Ukanafun LGA was arrested by the Ukanafun division for shooting his 35-year-old only son, Odudu James, who had been having a war of words with him. Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have killed a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Ogun State and abducted seven worshippers. Men of the Lagos state police command have arrested a 49-year-old woman for allegedly trying to steal a day-old baby from a hospital in the Ojokoro area of the state on Friday, June 23.    According to the state police command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Ojokoro police Division received information that the suspect arrived the hospital under the guise of being a patient and allegedly stole the infant.     ”She entered the female ward and carried a day-old baby boy, while the mother was fast asleep after undergoing a surgery. Another patient noticed the fast movement of the suspect with the baby in her hand, alerted the hospital authority and the suspect was arrested. Thousands of Permanent Voters’ Cards, or PVCs, have been discovered in the office of the Chairman of Ariaria International Market, Aba. Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ikechuckwu Emetu disclosed this during the 10th edition of Vision Africa Radio Station’s media training for journalists and other media practitioners. The discovery was made during a recent raid against extortion and illegal levies in the Ariaria International Market, Aba. 23 people have so far been arrested by the state government in the ongoing clampdown on extortion and illegal levies imposed on transporters and traders in the state. A police prosecution witness, Inspector Jola Oso, who investigated the murder of a 28-year-old sex worker, Elochukwu Solomon, in Lagos State, has told the court how she was killed by a bus conductor, Babatunde Oluwadamilare.  Testifying before Justice Adesanya, of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Tafawa Balewa Square on Thursday, June 1, 2023, Inspector Oso, said the 23-year-old defendant deliberately stabbed the deceased with a knife.  The witness, who was led in evidence-in-chief by the state prosecuting counsel, Olayemi Shofolu, said the defendant made a statement saying that he had an agreement to pay the late Solomon N2,000, but that it was after he had sex with her that the deceased said she was no longer collecting N2, 000 but N8, 000. ‘’The defendant said it was the deceased that first held his clothes before he saw a kitchen knife, and that immediately he saw the knife, he took it and stabbed the deceased,” the witness said. Men of the Ondo State police command have arrested a palm wine tapper identified as Sunday Mima, for allegedly raping an 80-year-old grandmother to death.  The suspect allegedly attacked the victim identified as Aderibigbe Felicia, a native of Ore in Odigbo council in the state, on her farm, stripped her naked and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.  The suspect was apprehended by some youths in the community who reportedly found in his possession the victim’s mobile telephone.  Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the state police command, Funmi Odunlami, said it was a case of rape and murder. She added that the suspect would soon be paraded by the command after interrogation and subsequently charged to court.  

Gunmen kidnap Imo Catholic priest

A priest with Okigwe Catholic Diocese in Imo State, Rev Fr Jude Maduka, was kidnapped by unknown gunmen on Friday, May 19 while preparing for Sunday’s eucharistic mass celebration.  According to a statement from the Catholic Diocese of Okigwe, Fr. Maduka who is the parish priest of Christ the King’s Parish, Ezinnachi/Ugwaku, Okigwe LGA of the state, was kidnapped from his New Adoration site at Ogii Village in Okigwe LGA while on inspection at the new site. The state police command is yet to comment on this development.
