Actress Thandiwe Newton reunites with her estranged husband Ol Parker for the first time since ending their 23-year marriage

Thandiwe Newton reunited with her estranged husband Ol Parker this week three months after announcing their split.  The Hollywood star, 49, confirmed the end of her 23-year marriage with the director three in April amid claims of emotional troubles. She later moved on with toyboy musician boyfriend Lonr, 25, with the couple seen putting on a PDA-filled display back in May.  It has been reported that Thandiwe has been suffering with emotional and family problems after separating from her husband Ol, with whom she shares children Ripley, 21, Nico, 17, and Booker, eight. But on Thursday, July 28, the ex-couple were seen in a civil exchange with her estranged husband as Ol, 52, who handed a mobile phone to her in California. The embattled actress is reportedly living with her musician lover Lonr following her recent split from husband of 16 years Ol. At 25, Lonr is four years older than Thandiwe and Ol's eldest child, 21-year-old Ripley.  

US president, Joe Biden tests positive for Covid again and goes back into White House isolation

US president, Joe Biden has tested positive for COVID-19 again, and will now head back into isolation just days after he was cleared to resume his duties.    In a memo, Biden's physician, Dr. Kevin O'Connor, said the president is experiencing no new symptoms and 'continues to feel quite well.'    O'Connor had warned of the possibility of a testing 'rebound,' which can occur on a small percentage of patients who, like Biden, used the antiviral medication Paxlovid as part of their treatment against COVID.  Biden had tested negative for COVID on Tuesday following five days of isolation, and he provided another negative test on Wednesday. He also tested negative on Thursday and Friday.   The White House said Biden was infected by the BA.5 variant, which is responsible for a fresh surge in cases around the world.

English clubs, Swansea and Bristol City have announced they will no longer take the knee before games this season. The Championship sides, who have adopted the anti-racism gesture since it came into the game in June 2020, stressed they remain committed to fighting discrimination. Omotayo Sanyaolu, the Senior Special Assistant on Tertiary Education, Youths and Students Affairs to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has been confirmed dead.    The former Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State died in an auto-crash on Friday July 29.    The accident occurred around Army Cantonment, Maryland, Ikeja in the early hours of Friday.    Confirming the incident in a statement, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyantolu said the deceased’s vehicle rammed into an ATM located around the cantonment.   Osanyantolu said;    ”Upon arrival at the scene it was discovered that a black Toyota Camry with registration number LAGH 32, while on top speed rammed into the Keystone Bank ATM located close to the Army Cantonment, Ikeja. “Unfortunately, an adult male, Sanyanolu, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle died on impact and his remains were immediately bagged upon arrival of emergen

Neurologist Ricardo Cruciani convicted of raping and sexually assaulting patients

A Manhattan neurologist was convicted Friday, July 29, for raping and sexually assaulting six patients. Ricardo Cruciani, 68, was found guilty on all 12 counts after a month-long trial.  During the trial, the court heard testimony about how he manipulated, abused and even got the women hooked on pain meds so they were dependent on him. The women – who testified at trial – were his patients at Beth Israel Medical Center and later at facilities in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The doctor was convicted on 12 counts of third-degree rape, sexual abuse, attempted rape, predatory sexual assault and criminal sexual act. He faces up to 25 years to life behind bars at his Sept. 14 sentencing. Prosecutors argued at trial that the patients came to Cruciani with rare diseases and chronic pain problems. The first picture of nine-year-old Lilia Valutyte who was stabbed to death in front of her younger sister has been released, as police launch a murder probe.   Lilia was reportedly playing in the street with a toy pram near the town centre of Boston, Lincolnshire, England, with her younger sister when the attack took place.   Police arrested two men in connection with the little girl’s murder on Thursday night, July 28, the Telegraph reported.   An unnamed neighbour described the girl's last moment, saying: "The little girl was playing in the street with her younger sister when it happened. They had some toys out.   "I'm sure her mum wouldn't have been far away as she always checked on them. Police arrest suspected kidnappers of Alao-Ala's farm supervisor and others

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested suspected 17 kidnappers for their involvement in some recent abductions in the state.    Spokesperson of the command, Adewale Osifeso, who disclosed this in a statement on Friday, July 29, said eight suspects were arrested in connection with the  abduction  of Christopher Bakare, the supervisor of a farm belonging to the late former governor of the state, Adebayo Alao-Akala.    Bakare was abducted on the farm in Jabata located in the Surulere Local Government Area of the state.    Some of the eight suspects were also said to have kidnapped the owner of a private clinic, Dr Abdurasheed Oladoye at Gbede in the same local government area. The police noted that some items including a gun and expended cartridge as well as some cash were recovered from them. 28 killed as bandits attack Sokoto community

28 persons have been killed following an attack by bandits in Duma village, Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State.    The bandits who invaded the community on Wednesday night, July 27, also rustled livestock and kidnapped some residents.    A resident, identified as Garba Mailambu, told NAN that the gunmen rode on motorcycles and were firing sporadically, adding that some fleeing residents drowned as they dived into a nearby river.   Another resident said the bandits forced the abducted persons, which included mostly youths, to lead the rustled livestock out of town.   The gunmen also reportedly demanded large quantities of petrol as ransom to release the abducted persons.   State Government confirmed the attack on Friday, July 29, in a statement signed by Muhammad Bello, the Special Adviser Media and Publicity to the Governor.    Governor Aminu Tambuwal, accompanied by all the security chiefs: Army, Air Force, Police, and the Department of State Security (DSS), obse

Two persons, a hotelier and his worker, have been abducted after gunmen suspected to be kidnappers invaded Abaa, a community near the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso on Thursday night, July 28.   The gunmen were said to have stormed the community which is located in the Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State on Thursday night and whisked away their victims   The owner of the hotel was said to have just returned days after he traveled when the kidnappers numbering about 10 stormed his premises, began shooting sporadically before whisking the victims away.   The state police command is yet to comment on this development.

Update: Footballer arrested on suspicion of rape has one allegation against him dropped

A Premier League player who was arrested on suspicion of rape has had one of three allegations against him dropped as his bail was extended until early October.     The footballer, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested in what was reportedly a dramatic 3am swoop by police in Barnet, north London, on July 4 over rape allegations against a woman in her 20s in June.     He was further arrested while in custody over allegations of raping a different woman in April and June 2021. The 29-year-old denies the allegations.      In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said 'no further action' would be taken in relation to the June 2021 offence.      'On 4 July, an allegation of rape of a woman in her 20s was reported to police,' the statement said.     'It was reported the alleged rape happened in June 2022. The US and Chinese leaders have warned each other over Taiwan during a phone call that lasted more than two hours on Thursday, July 28.   US President, Joe Biden told his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, that the US strongly opposed any unilateral moves by the Chinese military to change the status of the island. Biden also added that US policy on Taiwan had not changed. Algeria, Nigeria and Niger have signed a memorandum of understanding on construction of a vast gas pipeline project offering Europe potential future alternatives to Russian supplies.   The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) would transport billions of cubic metres of gas some 4,128 kilometres (2,565 miles) from Nigeria in West Africa, north through Niger and on to Algeria, according to a joint statement released by the three countries on Thursday evening,  July 28.   The statement says the gas could be pumped through the Mediterranean undersea Transmed pipeline to Italy, or loaded onto liquefied natural gas tankers for export.    Algerian Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab hosted Timipre Sylva and Mahamane Sani, his counterparts from Nigeria and Niger for talks on the project, Algerian state news agency APS reported.   The long-dormant project created in 2009 has galvanized more interest in recent months as gas prices have surged following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The Central Bank of Nigeria CBN says the non-remittance of dollars to foreign reserves by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is responsible for the naira’s free fall in the official and parallel markets.   On Thursday, July 28, the naira traded for N700/$1 at the parallel market and N415.96/$1 at the official market.   In a report released, the apex bank said the NNPC and its subsidiaries are the sole managers of crude oil which accounts for more than 80 percent of Nigeria’s Foreign Exchange (forex) earnings. The CBN in the report pointed that it does not print forex and cannot be the ones to make it available.   The report titled “The forex question in Nigeria: Fact sheet”, reads in part “Domestically, there has been zero dollar remittance to the country’s foreign reserve by the NNPC, insisting that the CBN does not print dollars. 7-year-old found dead in washing machine hours after he was reported missing

A 7-year-old Texas boy was found dead in a washing machine on Thursday morning, July 28, hours after he had been reported missing, police said.   Troy Khoeler was found inside a top load washing machine in the garage of his family’s home in Spring, Texas, around 7:20 a.m.   His adoptive parents had called 911 to report him missing two hours earlier, Harris County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Robert Minchew told reporters.   It’s not clear whether there was any water in the machine at the time.   Troy’s exact cause of death will be determined by the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office, Minchew said.    Officials could not comment on whether foul play was suspected or if he had climbed into the machine himself but said he was clothed when he was found. "We don’t know what happened, but we intend to find out," Minchew said.    "Whether he was killed by the washing machine or killed and placed in it, we’re just so far from that, I can’t comment," he later said.

A husband returned home to find his son's dog eating his wife's body after killing her.   The 66-year-old husband returned to his Long Island home in Nassau County, New York, to find his wife Marina Verriest, 70, dead, with the pit bull feasting on her body.   The incident happened at around 1pm on Wednesday, July 27.   The horrified man called the police, and when the first officer on the scene entered the family home the seven-year-old dog charged at him - forcing the officer to draw their weapon and fire, killing the dog. "The scene was pretty horrific. We don’t know what time the attack took place but there was obviously a lot of mutilation on the body and the arm, the face, the legs," Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said at a press conference. A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Chioma Eunice Igweike, who was allegedly abducted has been found dead with vital parts of her body missing.   Details of the incident are still sketchy at the time of filing this report but it was gathered that the deceased left her house on Wednesday, July, 20, 2022, for the three weeks orientation course at the Ogun State NYSC camp.   According to friends and former coursemates, the Federal Polytechnic Oko graduate was kidnapped and killed by suspected ritialists.  Meanwhile, friends have taken to Facebook to mourn her, with some of them calling for the scraping of the scheme.    Ike Sunday Chinedu, a former neighbour, wrote: "TRIBUTE TO MY NEIGHBOR Hearing the news of your death should be included Among one of the best shocks of my life, being admitted into the HND programme at federal polytechnic oko,you personally gave me and my friend lodge of which you happens to be an occupant of the lodge as well.

23-year-old man commits suicide in Lagos

A 23-year-old graduate of Business Administration from York University in Canada, Chinonso Anene, has allegedly committed suicide in Lagos.   According to reports, Anene reportedly locked himself inside his apartment at House 9, Emmanuel Court, Olusegun Aina Street, Parkview Estate, Ikoyi and thereafter used a pump action gun to shoot himself.    His lifeless body was discovered inside the wardrobe when police officers broke the door to his apartment. Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the state police command, SP Benjamin Huydeyin, said;   ''The DPO Ikoyi Division received a distress call from the Chief Security Officer of Parkview Estate, Mr Daramola, that Chinonso Anene has committed suicide. Based on the report, a team of detectives visited and photographed the scene, the door was forced open and one expended cartridge was recovered. The remains of the deceased have been deposited at Lagos Island morgue for autopsy while an investigation is ongoing.”

Nigerians to pay more for phone calls and data in new FG tax

The federal government is set to implement five per cent inclusive excise duty on telecommunications services in Nigeria, a move that will make Nigerians pay 12.5 per cent tax on telecommunications services.   Minister of Finance Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed made the announcement on Thursday July 28, at a stakeholders’ forum on implementation of excise duty on telecommunications services in Nigeria.    Speaking at the event organized by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Ahmed who was represented by the Assistant Chief Officer of the Ministry, Frank Oshanipin, said the five per cent excise duty has been in the Finance Act 2020 but was not implemented.   The delay in its implementation according to the Minister, was as a result of government’s engagement with stakeholders.   She said;    “Payments are to be made on monthly basis, on or before 21st of every month. “The duty rate was not captured in the Act because it is the responsibility of the presi

Bauchi Police confirms stabbing of two schoolboys over football argument

The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of an SS3 student of Government Secondary School, Games Village, in Bauchi metropolis for allegedly stabbing two other students.   The victims are currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained during a bloody clash in the area.   The students who were supporters of rival European soccer clubs were arguing about which club was superior in the school premises on Thursday, July 28, when the matter degenerated and one of them brought out a knife and stabbed the two students.   One of the students was stabbed in the chest and the other in his thighs.   An eyewitness, who saw the students when they were brought to the hospital, said: "I was about to enter the Federal Low Cost Primary Healthcare Center for a short get-well visit to a patient and I encountered the situation.   "The two boys were brought in drenched in blood for emergency treatment from the Games Village Junior Secondary School.   The spokesma

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state has reacted to gunmen attacking a construction firm in Owo community on Wednesday night.    LIB reported earlier that two security operatives were injured in the attack which caused panic in the community where Catholic worshippers were killed by gunmen weeks ago.    Commenting on the attack, Akeredolu said the gunmen had no plan to kill or abduct anyone. He also urged residents not to panic.   He said;    “I want to allay the fears of our people. A 27-year-old man has gone viral after complaining that he can’t get job because he looks like a child. Videos of Mao Sheng, from Guangdong province, China, spread through social media.   In the video, he complained that the way he looks is proving to be a serious problem in his life.   He said most employers don’t believe him when he says how old he is, while others think his appearance will cause issues with authorities who could start snooping around if they think child labour laws are being broken.  The original video was recorded on a street in Dongguan, China, and sees him vent his frustration that he can’t support his father financially because he can’t find work.  He even said that he had initially gone out looking for work with a friend but while his friend had found work quickly, he was left without any offers. Nigeria's armed forces have assured President Muhammadu Buhari of a new strategy to deal with terrorists and bandits in the country.    National Security Adviser (NSA), Major General Babagana Monguno, disclosed this as he briefed reporters after a Security Council meeting on Thursday, July 28 in Abuja. “Members of the armed forces have made a commitment that in the coming weeks, they have already started working on a new strategy to deal with these snippets of violence,” he said. “They have given their word, commitment to the President that there will be a change in momentum, regardless of the fact that there might be a certain institutional limitations which they face. Terrorists raid military checkpoint near Abuja, reportedly gun down soldiers

Bandits attacked a military checkpoint in Zuma Rock Madalla, along the Kaduna-Abuja highway on Thursday evening, July 28.   Some soldiers were reportedly killed when the terrorists raided the military checkpoint situated around Zuma rock in Niger State which is close to Madalla town which is a few meters away from Zuba along the Abuja-Kaduna highway.   According to reports, the attackers arrived at the spot some minutes after 7pm and opened fire immediately.   “They took control of the area for about 30 minutes and kept on shooting before heading towards Kaduna axis of the expressway,”an eyewitness said   About 20 minutes after the terrorists left, soldiers from Zuma Barracks rushed to the scene and took full control. Man arraigned for biting police officer's finger in Lagos

A 26-year-old man identified as Tijani Muiz, was on Thursday, July 28, arraigned before an Ejigbo Magistrate Court, Lagos State, for allegedly biting the finger of a policeman.   Muiz was arraigned on three counts bordering on assault, conduct likely to cause breach of peace and unlawful obstruction, preferred against him by the police.   The prosecutor, Inspector Benedict Aigbokhan, had told the court that the defendant committed the offenses on July 24 around 9.30pm at Jakande Gate, Ejigbo, Lagos State. Aigbokhan said the defendant obstructed a policeman, Inspector Raymond Maugbe, from carrying out his official duty.   “In the course of obstructing the officer from carrying out his official duty, the defendant assaulted the officer by biting him on his left finger'' Aigbokhan said   The prosecutor said the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of public peace. The federal government has said that there is need to regulate   birth rate in the country to achieve sustainable development.   Daily Trust reported that Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, said this in Abuja on Thursday July 2, at the celebration of the World Population Day, organised by the National Population Commission (NPC).   Ehanire who was represented by Director, Family Health, Salma Ibrahim Anas, said it would be difficult for Nigeria to achieve its Sustainable Development Goals with current 5.3 fertilty average in the country.   He said;    “We must regulate fertility, without fertility regulation, we’re going nowhere. This is actually the key to unlock the success of sustainable development in Nigeria and the Ministry of Health has positioned itself to fulfill this purpose.”
