Imo, Anambra lead UTME fraud list, JAMB arrests 149

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has said that it caught 149 candidates for various examination malpractices in the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination which ended on Sunday, March 22. JAMB published the names and states of the 149 candidates in its weekly bulletin obtained by our correspondent with Imo, Anambra and Enugu States topping the list with 26, 12 and 12 candidates respectively. The offences included; examination by proxy, attempt to cheat, forceful entrance, tampering with examination documents, smuggling of mobile phones into the examination halls among others. Other states on the list included; Abia, Adamawa, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kwara, Ondo, Oyo, and Osun. The board said, “Examination Infraction in the UTME is declining with the 2020 experience. Dolores Aveiro, 65, was released nearly two weeks after medics at Madeira’s Nelio Mendonca Hospital saved her life. Governor Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom states has said that there are no plans to shut down schools in the state due to the Coronavirus pandemic. In a state wide broadcast delivered on Saturday morning, Governor Udom said that there is no confirmed case of COVID-19 disease in Akwa Ibom State and that as a matter of fact, the measures put in place at the state airport to curb the spread of the virus into the state, is comprehensive and has no parallel anywhere in West Africa. He appealed to residents of the state to adhere strictly to preventive measures so they do not contact the virus. WAEC postpones 2020 WASSCE till further over notice of corona virus

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has postponed the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates for 2020 until further notice due to the spread of coronavirus.  Patrick Ehidiamen Areghan, WAEC's head of national office in Nigeria, on Friday, March 20, said that the examination earlier fixed to begin on Monday, April 6, across member nations will no longer be conducted as planned, The Nation reports. In a statement on Friday, Areghan said:  “This decision is a demonstration of the organisation’s concern and support for the various protocols being put in place by the federal and state governments of Nigeria and the governments of the other member countries to check the spread of the disease." He added that upon the improvement of the global health circumstances that necessitated the postponement, a new date will be fixed and announced to the public.
