Nigerian Health Workers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Non-Implementation Of Agreement

The Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) says it has commenced its nationwide indefinite strike. Obisesan Oluwatuyi, general secretary of the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), disclosed this in an interview with NAN on Wednesday in Abuja. Oluwatuyi said the workers will not call off the strike until the government meets their demands. He said: “The soldiers have been let loose, no retreat, no surrender until the government does the needful.” JOHESU had earlier issued a strike threat through Josiah Biobelemoye, president of the union. Biobelemoye had attributed the industrial action to the “insensitivity and lackadaisical attitude of drivers of the health sector”. Suspected bandits on Wednesday attacked two villages in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State , killing some people . The Cable reported that the suspects attacked a mining site at Kuru - kuru village and also ambushed some people from the neighbouring Jarkuka village as they mobilised to bring help to Kuru - kuru . A witness, Sadi Musa , said scores of people were killed at the mining site on Wednesday evening which forced the miners to flee for safety . Musa said when residents from the nearby Jarkuka came later to join the Kuru - kuru survivors in burying the dead , the gunmen attacked again , and killed more people . The Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday uncovered an illegal brewery where malt drinks and fake stout are produced at Egbe-Afa, Igbobo area of Ikorodu in Lagos. Five of the suspects behind the factory were also arrested by a team led by Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, who took newsmen to the scene of the crime. It was discovered that the illegal brewery produced malt drinks, stout and Ethanol which they pump into trucks to bottle at another location. According to Imohimi, the suspects would be further interrogated to know where the drinks are bottled and sold.

Nigerian Army gets new university A new university has been approved for the Nigerian Army. The Federal Executive Council (FEC) gave the approval on Wednesday at its meeting. The university will be located in Biu, Borno State. The approval follows the presentation of a memo by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu. Mr. Adamu announced the approval while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the meeting of the council. The Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, a lieutenant general, had earlier in March announced that the Nigerian Army will upgrade the Institute of Technology and Environmental Studies to a full fledge University of Technology and Environmental Studies. “The university was conceived as a unique one that will be different from conventional universities in Nigeria. “The concept is to make it a solution provider and a centre of excellence for a variety of technologically related ventures such as generation and armament production,” the army chief said.

A grandmother has been arrested in Benin city, Edo state after she burnt her grand daughter's fingers because she ate a plate of indomie without her permission. According to eyewitnesses, the grandmother tortued her granddaughter by placing her hand on a gas stove until it got badly burnt. A person who witnessed the incident reported the case to the Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs who alerted the police and the grandmother has been arrested. The flagship state-owned newspaper Al-Ahram also raised its estimate of turnout in the March 26-28 election to 42.08 percent, saying 25 million of Egypt’s 60 million registered voters had cast ballots. On Tuesday, the paper had reported that Sisi was re-elected with 92 percent of the vote on a turnout of just over 40 percent. It gave no explanation for the upward revisions. Sisi, who as army chief ousted Egypt’s first freely elected president Islamist Mohamed Morsi after mass street protests in 2013, won his first term in 2014 with 96.9 percent of the vote.
