Everton sack manager Rafa Benitez after just six-and-a-half months in charge following Norwich defeat

Everton have sacked manager Rafael Benitez after just six-and-a-half months in charge following Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Norwich.  The Toffees have won just once in the Premier League since September and are 15th in the table, six points above the relegation zone and on January 15 lost to lowly ranked Norwich.  Benitez, a former manager of Liverpool (Everton's city rivals) was appointed Everton boss last summer but the Spaniard has failed to win over the Goodison Park faithful with his style of football or results. Everton fans displayed a banner calling for his exit during Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Norwich. The same banner was also unfurled at their 3-2 FA Cup third-round win at Hull. It was another convincing win for the Super Eagles of Nigeria after they recorded a 3-1 win over the Falcons of Sudan on Saturday, January 15, 2022. Two first-half goals from Samuel Chukwueze and Taiwo Awoniyi plus a Moses Simon strike in the second ensured the Eagles maintained a strong grasp of Group D leadership with six points from their first two matches while also confirming their place in the second round of the ongoing African Cup of Nations. Sowore secures freedom for man they say was illegally detained by police

Former presidential candidate and agitator for good governance in Nigeria, Omoyele Sowore has secured freedom for a man that they say was falsely detained by the Police in Abuja. Sowore who was informed of the man’s plight by one of his compatriots yesterday, stormed the police Headquarters to get the man released. As commented by the detained man's relatives, he was locked up in custody for 2 weeks with an allegation from a ‘big man’. They said the story turned around with Sowore’s presence at the Police headquarters and the man’s bail was immediately granted. Sowore, speaking after the man’s release, said he will continue to stand and speak for the voiceless Nigerians till the issue of balance equality of rights is achieved. watch the video here

Man stabbed to death after disagreement with bouncer at Lagos nightclub

A yet-to-be-identified Nigerian man has died after he was allegedly stabbed to death in Lagos following a fight that broke out at a nightclub located in the Iju area of the state. According to The Cable, the incident happened at Lounge 95 in the early hours of Saturday, January 15. A resident of the area claimed the victim had a disagreement with the bouncer and this led to a fight. “The guy was stabbed at the club after a disagreement with one of the bouncers at the club. After his death, his friends or some people that knew him came to the police, before the police came to the place” he said  Olamide Ogunlewe one of the police officers on the ground, said an investigation was ongoing on the case.

IBB explains why he is yet to remarry after wife's death

Former Military Head of State, brahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) has explained why he didn't remarry after the death of his wife, Hajiya Maryam Babangida.  Maryam, who was Nigeria’s First Lady between 1985 and 1993, died at the University of California’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Centre (JCCC) in Los Angeles, United States on December 27, 2009, at the age of 61, after battling ovarian cancer for years.   12 years after her death, the former military president in an interview with Trust TV, explained why is yet to remarry.  When asked if he has remarried as claimed by some news platforms, IBB said "No" and also disclosed that he decided to honour his late "by being not a bachelor but being unmarried".  He said;  “No, I didn’t do it, you would have known. “The media still snoop around me, they should have known. I haven’t. It is a matter of choice; I decided to honour her by being not a bachelor but being unmarried.”

Women's tennis legend Chris Evert diagnosed with ovarian cancer

Tennis legend and ESPN broadcaster, has revealed she was diagnosed with stage one ovarian cancer last month.  'I wanted to share my stage one ovarian cancer diagnosis and the story behind it as a way to help others,' the 67-year-old, who was the world number one women's singles player seven times, wrote on Twitter.  'I feel very lucky that they caught it early and expect positive results from my chemo plan.' In an article on ESPN, Evert said a malignant tumor was discovered during a preventive hysterectomy early last month. A second operation revealed that the cancer had been removed during the hysterectomy and had not spread.  Following chemotherapy, her doctor said there was a better than a 90 percent chance the cancer would never return. 'I don't remember being that happy in years!' Evert said after getting the news from her doctor. She won 18 Grand Slam singles championships and three doubles titles, and was the year-end world number one

IPOB declares sit-at-home in South-East on Tuesday

British- Nigerian gospel singer,  Muyiwa Olarewaju has received the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) Award. The award-winning singer, 52, was presented the Officer of the Order of the British Empire medal by the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, at an investiture ceremony held at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, January 12. The BBC One talent show judge and radio host was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2020 for his services to music. The 52-year-old singer took to his Instagram page on Friday to share pictures of the investiture ceremony and wrote:   “For Services to music. Thank you to everyone that has relentlessly invested in this ‘young man’. You made it possible. A lecturer of mine told me no one is paying attention to you doing gospel music. FIFA suspend Senegal star Pape Gueye from football as part of probe into midfielder's transfer from Watford to Marseille

FIFA have reportedly suspended Marseille midfielder Pape Gueye as part of their investigation into his move to the Ligue 1 club from Watford in 2020. The suspension means that Gueye, who is currently at the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal, cannot take part in any competition until further notice.   The 22-year-old came off the bench for Senegal's 1-0 win over Zimbabwe on Monday but was not in the squad for their 0-0 draw against Guinea on Friday.    'There were problems between Watford and Marseille on a transfer [and] FIFA has suspended him,' Senegal manager Aliou Cisse said.   Gueye joined the Hornets in the summer of 2020 on a free transfer from the French side Le Havre, but was sold to Marseille just 17 hours later.   Despite his incredibly short stint as Watford player, the Premier League club were able to claim compensation as the Senegal international had signed a pre-contract with them in January 2020.   Gueye reportedly signed a £45,000-a-week deal w

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted four students of Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) Nasarawa State.   The students were abducted by the heavily armed men at the university community in Mararaba campus on Thursday, January 13.   The Head of Information and Public Relations Unit of the institution, Mr. Abubakar Ibrahim, who confirmed the incident in a press statement said the gunmen stormed the community, located close to the University at about 11:30 pm and whisked the students to an undisclosed location.  "The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Shehu Abdul Rahman, on behalf of the management of the institution, expressed his profound outrage at the unfortunate development and condemned it in strong terms and demand for the immediate release of those kidnapped," the statement reads.   The statement said that the vice-chancellor, who has since inspected the area where the students were kidnapped, paid an unscheduled visit to the Nasarawa Pol

Second Republic Politician, senior lawyer and Elder statesman, Chief Guy Ikokwu, is dead.   He died after a brief illness on Wednesday, January 12, 2022.  The head of the Ikokwu family, Chief Ugonna Ikokwu, confirmed the politician’s death in a statement on Friday, Jan. 14.  The statement read, "On behalf of Chief Ugonna Ogonna Ikokwu head of Ikokwu Family of Oba I announce the transition to glory of Chief Omenife Guy Ike Ikokwu former President of Otu Oka-Iwu, on Wednesday 12th of January 2022. He was aged 85 years. "He is survived by 4 children and grandchildren, 7 siblings and numerous cousins nephews and nieces. "Further announcements will be made by the family. "Meanwhile we ask for your continued prayers for repose of the soul of Omenife in paradise."  Chief Ikokwu was the Second Republic Chairman of the Nigerian Peoples Party, NPP in old Anambra State and pioneer chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Anambra.

New York homeless man arrested for beating up and robbing Good Samaritan of nearly $1,500⁠

Surveillance video shows a homeless man attacking and robbing a Good Samaritan who tried to cover him with his coat.  The incident happened on Wednesday morning, Jan. 12, on a Midtown sidewalk in New York.  A 59-year-old man, while walking along the road, saw Xavier Israel, 25, who was laying on a sidewalk in front of 476 5th Ave.?  The victim tries covering Israel with his jacket but Israel leaps to his feet and attacks the Good Samaritan then steals his wallet from his pocket.  Further into the video, you can see the victim tries in vain to grab his wallet, but the suspect hits him and throws him to the ground.?  Police arrested Israel shortly after he fled the scene on West 41st St. and 5th Ave.  They recovered nearly $1,500 from Israel after witnesses told them he stuffed cash inside his pants.?  According to sources, Israel was charged with assault, robbery, and grand larceny.?

Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has disclosed that he has two sons from different mothers.  During an interview with Jahbless Original Intelligence, Portable spoke about his private life. He said he has many girlfriends professing love for him because of his new-found fame.  He added that he has a girlfriend he really loves and wants to marry but she is now "misbehaving" because of his new "glory".  Speaking about kids, he said he has two sons from two different women. He said: "I have two boys, strong mafians."  When asked about the mother of the children, he revealed that his sons are from different mothers.  He, however, declined to answer when he asked about their whereabouts.  He also spoke about how much he suffered before his rise to stardom.

Little boy severely abused, beaten and left naked in bush in Akwa Ibom

Akwa Ibom-based Danish aid worker, Anja Ringgren Loven and her team have rescued a little boy who was found naked in the bush in Eket.   According to Ms Loven, the child was brutally beaten, abused and in severe pain when he was found few days ago.    In a Facebook post on Thursday January 13, the aid worker said that the boy is also very traumatized and had not spoken a word since her husband, David rescued him.  "It has been a terrible week. A few days ago David found a little boy thrown into the bushes along side the road. The boy was not wearing any clothes. He was seriously abused and beaten," she narrated.  David immediately called the police and took the boy to the hospital and called Land of Hope nurse Itoro to meet him there.  The boy is on constant analgesic due to severe pain. A Twitter user has shared the story of a friend who abandoned his N350, 000 a month job in Nigeria and relocated to Canada in search for greener pastures.  According to @Tweetoracle, two years after the said friend relocated, things haven't been going well for him as he keeps complaining bitterly about 'life abroad' not being easy.  He said his friend regrets moving to Canada and has made known his plans to relocate back to Nigeria.
