Russia to build Nuclear Power Plant in Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso's military leaders have signed a deal with Russia to build a nuclear power plant to increase electricity supplies.

"The government of Burkina Faso has signed a memorandum of understanding for the construction of a nuclear power plant," the government said in a statement.

 The agreement was signed at the Russian Energy Week in Moscow, which was attended by Burkina Faso's energy minister Simon-Pierre Boussim.

 The document "fulfills the wish of the president of [Burkina] Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traore, expressed [in] July at the Russia-Africa summit during a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin," the statement said.

 Russia's state atomic energy agency Rosatom said in its own statement that "the memorandum is the first document in the field of the peaceful use of atomic energy between Russia and Burkina Faso."

 The nuclear power plant will enable the country to meet its energy needs, it said, adding that the agreement was signed by energy and mines minister Simon-Pierre Boussim, and Nikolay Spasskiy, Rosatom's deputy director general.

 The deal signed on Friday, follows a request made by Burkina Faso junta leader Captain Ibrahim Traore to Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Russia-Africa summit in St Petersburg in July.

 Traore, who sized power in a military coup in September 2022, has moved closer to Russia as its relationship with its former colonial power France sours, while Russia has move to break Western isolation over the Ukraine conflict and expand its influence in Africa.

Senate panel to present report on Buhari’s impeachment today

The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters is expected to present its report on President Muhammadu Buhari’s impeachment on Wednesday. The committee is looking into the approval of the payment of $496m out of the Excess Crude Account for the purchase of military aircraft. The 12 Super Tucano aircraft ordered from the United States will be delivered in 2020. The Senate had on Thursday resolved to refer the matter to the committee for legal advice, when lawmakers became divided on it. The panel was given the mandate to see whether the President violated the constitution or not. Most of the lawmakers who spoke on the withdrawal pointed out that the President had breached Section 80 of the 1999 Constitution, while a few disagreed. Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat denies renouncing his Nigerian citizenship

The deputy governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, has denied renouncing his Nigerian citizenship. Last week, it was widely reported that an immigration lawyer in the United States, Olubusayo Fasidi, had told the Lagos Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal that Hamzat took an oath of allegiance in the US, to renounce his Nigerian citizenship. A heartwarming video showing the moment a Nigerian mum reunited with her mentally challenged son, Bamidele, who went missing four years ago, has been shared online. Bamidele who was a four hundred level student of the Olabisi Onabanjo University was found wandering on the streets by an NGO, South-Westshire Health Trust, who took him into their facility and has been taking care of him.  Recently, Bamidele could remember a bit about his family and his mum was successfully traced.
