Wayne Rooney's arrest for public intoxication was a result of feeling "disorientated" after taking sleeping tablets on a flight while drinking, says his spokesman. The former England and Manchester United captain was arrested on 16 December at Dulles International Airport in Virginia after returning from a one-day trip to Saudi Arabia. Rooney, 33, was charged and paid a $25 fine and $91 costs on 4 January, according to court documents from Loudoun General District Court. In a statement, his spokesman said: "During the flight Wayne took a prescribed amount of sleeping tablets mixed with some alcohol consumption and consequently was disorientated on arrival. "He was approached by police who arrested him on a minor misdemeanour charge. "He received a statutory automatic fine and was released shortly afterwards at the airport. The matter is now at an end. The Federal Government has reached an agreement with members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Addressing journalists on Monday evening after the meeting with the striking lecturers in Abuja, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said the majority of their demands have been met including the release of N15.4 billion for payment of salary shortfalls.  According to him, the Federal Government is also in the process of releasing another N20 billion for payment of earned allowances for university lecturers. Meanwhile, the ASUU President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, said the National Executive Committee of the union will review their decisions based on the new commitment by the government. According to him, it is only after that meeting of the ASUU leadership that the union will announce its position on the ongoing strike action. In the mail, the thief apologized for stealing the laptop and also went on to state that he is extremely poor and needed money so badly he had to take the laptop. The thief who said he was willing to send back any important files on the laptop also revealed that he left the owner’s phone and wallet, with the hope they will make up for the stolen laptop.

Justice Daniel Longji of the Plateau state High Court in Jos, has sentenced a 24-year-old man, Godwin Banchir, to death by hanging, for beating his 65-years-old mother to death just because she failed to respond to his greetings. Bachir was first arraigned on June 6th 2016 and charged with culpable homicide, contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code punishable with death upon conviction. He is was said to have committed the crime on Jan. 21st 2016, when he used a stick to beat his mother to death. Banchir in his confessional statement said that he returned from the farm on the said date and found his mother sitting in the compound and when he greeted her, she ignored him. As the Federal government continues to debate whether or not to increase the miniumum wage from N18, 000 to N30, 000, the South African government has gone ahead to increase that of it's civil servants from N97, 495 to N126,480 per month. South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, who signed the new minimum wage into law yesterday November 26th, said the new wage would take effect from January 1st 2019 and would benefit about six million workers that currently earn R3,700 (N97,495). One South African Rand is equivalent to N26.35. This means South African workers would be earning N527 per hour: N4,216 per day and N126,480 per month. Their Nigerian counterparts currently earn N75 per hour, which is N600 per day (at eight working hours per day) and N18,000 per month. Recall that the sytate governors and the labour unions have been at loggerheads over the demand for the increase in minimum wage. Zamfara State High Court sitting in Gusau, has sentenced a serving member of the State’s House of Assembly, Lawali Attahiru Dogonkade, to four years imprisonment over an alleged N31 million fraud.   Dogonkade who was arraigned today by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on a four-count charge bordering on conferring corrupt advantage on himself admitted guilt before Justice Bello Shinkafi, thereby leading to his immediate conviction by the court.   The convict, representing Kauran-Namoda Local Government in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, was accused of using his position to confer corrupt advantage upon himself in a N31, 290, 000 contract meant for the supply of medical equipment to the State Government in violation of Sections 10, 12 and 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.   Counsel to ICPC, Mashkur Salisu, in one of the counts told the court that the convict received N4.5 million from the
