Uduak-Akpan Attempts To Escape After Death Sentence

A video of convicted rapist and murderer, Uduak Akpan, trying to flee the High court after he was sentenced to death by hanging has been shared online.   Uduak was convicted by Justice Bassey Nkanang of the Akwa Ibom State High Court today August 4, for raping and killing Iniubong Umoren. Umoren, a graduate of Philosophy, University of Uyo, was killed in April 2021 by Akpan. The deceased was job hunting while awaiting mobilization for the compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme when she encountered Akpan who feigned he had a job for her. On getting to his apartment, Akpan raped her, and then killed her.   Shortly after he was sentenced to death by hanging, Uduak attempted to flee the court room. Video here

Chelsea have confirmed the £20m signing of Carney Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa.    The Blues saw off competition from Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona to land the midfielder just one day ahead of the new Premier League season. The 18-year-old had previously rejected a new contract at Villa, with it being understood he wanted £100,000 per week, and he has now agreed a six-year deal at Stamford Bridge.  The England Under 19 international admitted he is now relieved the deal has been done and that he can now finally fully focus on his game. Chelsea 'open talks over a shock swoop for ex-Arsenal striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang'

Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has received the report from a committee set up by the state government to investigate 12 May students unrest at the Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE).   Recall that a student of SSCOE, Deborah Samuel, was stoned to death by a mob in the college premises over alleged blasphemy.   In the same breath, the governor said having received the recommendation of the committee and heard from the several stakeholders and leaders in the state on the need for the college to reopen, his administration will look into the possibility of doing so.    He directed the Governing Council of the SSCOE to convene a meeting with a view to reopening the college soonest.   The Governor also assured the people of the state that the government will implement the recommendations of the committee, reiterating his belief that doing so will prevent future reoccurrence not only in affected college but in all tertiary insti...

The Yobe State Commissioner for Youth, Sports, Social, and Community Development, Hon. Singer Willow Smith   stopped her performance after someone in the crowd fainted.    The 21-year-old daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith has been opening up for Machine Gun Kelly and noticed a fan had fainted during her gig at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh on Tuesday.   She quickly stopped her performance and a video shared online shows the star talking to the crowd to offer words of encouragement to the injured fan before wishing them a speedy recovery.   A clip from the incident shows the singer on stage seemingly unsure of what was happening in the crowd.  As her band tones down a song mid-set, a fan is heard shouting: "We love you," to which Willow responded: "Love you guys, man. Kano-based politician, Salisu Tanko-Yakassai, has berated President Buhari for allegedly allowing his appointees ignore the directives given to them without any consequences.   Salisu stated this on Twitter after the two-week directive President Buhari gave the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, to ensure the ASUU strike is called off, terminated before Tuesday, August 2.   The strike action by the lecturers still lingers. Sidi Aminu Sharif, one of the freed passengers of the Abuja-Kaduna train has narrated his four months ordeal in captivity.   The victim, who was freed alongside four other passengers on Tuesday, August 2, narrated how he was accidentally shot by the terrorists on their 85th day in the den.    Speaking at the Kaduna office of Tukur Mamu, Kaduna-based publisher who facilitated the release of some of the train passengers, the victim said efforts made to remove the bullets were unsuccessful.   Sharif said the terrorists’ doctor invited to attend to him failed in his several attempts to extract the bullet from his abdomen.   The victim said that he would be needing a proper medical procedure to have the bullet removed from his body   “I am one of the passengers of the train attacked in Kaduna on its way from Abuja. Insecurity: Governor Bello orders closure of brothels, bans facemasks in Kogi

Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, has ordered the closure of all brothels and demolition of shanties in any community suspected to be harbouring criminals in the state.    The governor gave the order on Tuesday, August 2, in Lokoja, during a meeting with all first and second-class traditional rulers and the 21 local government chairmen.   The governor also banned the wearing of facemasks in public places for proper identification.   "We are aware that some criminals will take a machine or keke NAPEP and wear a face cap and nose mask and be spying or going for criminal activities. Therefore, except in hospitals or related institutions, use of nose masks in public is hereby banned and prohibited in Kogi State,” the governor declared.   "All brothels as from today are closed down completely. Country music singer Naomi Judd left daughters Wynonna Judd, 58, and Ashley Judd, 54, out of her will.   Judd, who died at the age of 76 by suicide on April 30, 2022, named her husband of 33 years, musician Larry Strickland, the executor of her estate.   A copy of the will states Strickland has "full authority and discretion" to do what he sees fit with properties within the estate, including selling or leasing them, without approval of any court or the "joinder of any beneficiary."   Strickland is also entitled to "reasonable compensation" for his services and any expenses, including attorney and accountant's fees. If Strickland can not serve as executor for death or other reasons, Judd appointed her brother-in-law, Reginald Strickland, and Daniel Kris Wiatr, as co-executors, the will states. A video of a man who collapsed after allegedly losing a N200k loan at a betting shop has gone viral online.  Eyewitness claim the incident occurred at a betting shop in Ekpan, Delta state. It was also gathered that the man borrowed the N200k from loan shark operators for his house rent, but took it to the betting shop, hoping he would double it.    He however lost all the money to a virtual game a.k.a baby.

Gunmen reportedly kidnap couple in Delta

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted one Mr Abala Opuoru and his wife in Sapele, Delta State.    According to report, the couple were abducted on Tuesday night, August 2, along Defil Road/Nddc Road in Amukpe.   It was gathered that Mr Opuoru was previously kidnapped and regained his freedom about three weeks ago after paying undisclosed large sum as ransom.    It was further learnt that the couple is still struggling to pay off debt incurred after paying the ransom.

Police arrest two robbers who raped pregnant woman in Rivers

The Rivers State Police Command has arrested two armed robbery suspects who allegedly raped a pregnant woman during one of their operations.   Spokesperson of the command, Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, August 1, 2022.   The PPRO said the two suspects, Saviour Gbarale, 24, and Onyedikachi Uhala, 18, of Etche Street in Borikiri, Port Harcourt, were arrested by operatives of the C4i Intelligence Unit of the command.   "The suspects specialise in house breaking and have been linked to series of recent armed robberies in the Port Harcourt metropolis and its environs. Investigations also revealed that the suspects raped and sexually abused a pregnant woman in the cause of their nefarious operations." she stated.

US drone strike kills Al Qaeda leader Zawahiri in Afghanistan

The United States has killed an al Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri in a strike in Afghanistan over the weekend, the biggest blow to the terrorist group since its founder Osama bin Laden was killed in 2011. Zawahiri, an Egyptian surgeon who had a $25 million bounty on his head, helped coordinate the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York. Zawahiri died after a U.S. drone strike in the Afghan capital Kabul at 6:18 a.m. (0148 GMT) on Sunday. Reacting to the incident, U.S president, Joe Biden said; "Now justice has been delivered, and this terrorist leader is no more," Biden, said in remarks from the White House on Monday night, August 1.  "No matter how long it takes, no matter where you hide, if you are a threat to our people, the United States will find you and take you out." Italian football club, Napoli has named Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen as its new penalty taker after he scored a penalty kick in Sunday’s friendly game. INEC warns of fake online registration portal

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has alerted Nigerians of the existence of a fake online site urging Nigerians to enroll for "voter card pvc" registration.   This comes barely 24 hours after INEC announced the suspension of voter registration across the country.   The fake online portal claimed that the Federal Government has approved PVC registration online to avoid the unnecessary crowd in the "NIMC".   INEC warned that the site is not linked to the Commission and the link/portal is spurious and from a dubious source.   The Commission said INEC is the only body constitutionally and legally mandated to conduct the registration of persons qualified to vote in any election in Nigeria and to update and revise the register when the need arises.   It reiterated that the Commission is solely responsible for organizing, undertaking, and supervising national elections in the country and does not share this responsibility with anybod...

Tipper crushes father of 30 children to death in Kogi

NAFDAC workers call off strike after five weeks

The strike embarked on by Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has been called off.    Recall that the NAFDAC workers embarked on a strike on June 22 over the non-payment of welfare packages.   Abubakar Jimoh, NAFDAC spokesman who spoke to TheCable on Monday August 1, said the strike was called off after the union reached an agreement with the agency.    Staff of the agency have been instructed to resume immediately. Jimoh said;    “Yes, they have called off the strike and agreement reached with the union. The union has told the staff to resume work immediately.”

Cleveland Browns quarterback, Deshaun Watson has been suspended by the NFL for only six games of the 2022 season for violating the league's personal conduct policy following accusations of sexual misconduct.   The 26-year-old quarterback was accused of sexually assaulting and harassing dozens of female massage therapists in the Houston area between 2019 and 2021, when he was a member of the Texans.   Watson, who played for four seasons with the Houston Texans before being traded to Cleveland in March, recently settled 23 of 24 lawsuits filed by massage therapists alleging sexual harassment and assault during massage sessions in 2020 and 2021.   In their lawsuits, the women accused Watson of exposing himself, touching them with his penis or kissing them against their will. Gunmen abduct locals and throw them off a bridge in Anambra

Gunmen abducted some people in Anambra state and proceeded to throw them off a bridge, leaving them to land on the cemented base of a drainage channel.   The incident happened over the weekend in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area of the state.   The victims were said to have been abducted along Nnobi—Nnewi Road and taken to Alor where they were thrown from a bridge top along the Obiaja River.   A video from the scene is going viral online. It shows one of the abductees narrating his experience, while being interviewed by some men of Tiger Squad local vigilante, Alor.   One of the victims, who introduced himself as Benjamin Okafor, said he was driving in his Toyota Camry car to his hometown, Amichi, in Nnewi South Local Government Area, with one other person, before he was abducted at about 9pm.   They were then thrown out from the top of the bridge after a while. Arsenal striker, Folarin Balogun is set to join French club Reims on a season-long loan deal.   The 21-year-old Nigerian striker signed a new four-year contract last April which runs until 2025 and remains a part of manager Mikel Arteta’s long-term plans. But the club is willing to let him leave on loan to aid his development with regular football having bolstered their frontline with the signing of Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City.    According to Fabrizio Romano, Folarin Balogun is inching closer to signing for Reims in Ligue 1, despite having offers from Premier League clubs. The Gunners will let the 21-year-old forward depart on a loan deal as competition for places at the Emirates remains high.   Balogun has made 10 appearances for Arsenal, though two have been starts, and scored twice.   He also spent the second half of last season on loan at Middlesbrough and has scored six times in 11 appearances for England under-21s.
