Gunmen reportedly kidnap couple in Delta

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted one Mr Abala Opuoru and his wife in Sapele, Delta State. 

 

According to report, the couple were abducted on Tuesday night, August 2, along Defil Road/Nddc Road in Amukpe.

 

It was gathered that Mr Opuoru was previously kidnapped and regained his freedom about three weeks ago after paying undisclosed large sum as ransom. 

 

It was further learnt that the couple is still struggling to pay off debt incurred after paying the ransom.

Drug addict arrested for stabbing Lagos cleric to death

A 30-year-old man identified simply as David, who is said to be under the influence of hard drugs, has allegedly stabbed a cleric, Akeem Ojiwusi, to death around Odekeye close, in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State.   PUNCH Metro  gathered that David was fond of committing different crimes whenever he got intoxicated and his actions usually put him at loggerheads with his neighbours. On the fateful day the crime was committed, Ojiwusi’s relative, who identified himself simply as Sefiu, said he was at home when the cleric sent him to buy some drugs for his treatment. Nigeria’s VAT performance lowest in West Africa – FG

The Federal Government, on Tuesday, raised concern over the performance of the Value Added Tax in Nigeria as the lowest in the West African region. While describing the development as worrisome, the government stressed the need for a change in policies, adding that the country’s VAT rate was less than one per cent to the Gross Domestic Product. The Director of Tax Policy in the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Basheer Abdulkadir, raised the concern at the opening event of a three-day workshop on the harmonisation of Nigeria’s VAT Act with ECOWAS directives. The programme was organised by the ECOWAS Commission under the context of implementation of support Programme for Tax Transition in West Africa. Nigeria is positioning itself to benefit from rising global oil prices while managing the associated economic risks, according to the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun. Speaking in Abuja at a World Bank presentation on Nigeria’s Development Update, Edun said the Federal Government intends to maximise revenue gains from higher crude oil prices amid ongoing global tensions, particularly the Middle East crisis. He noted that Nigeria, as an oil-producing nation, stands to both gain and lose from rising prices. While increased oil prices boost government revenue, they also raise costs across the economy, especially in energy and food production. Dangote refinery raises petrol to N1,275, diesel now N1,950

Amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and their ripple effects on global energy markets, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has increased the gantry price of petrol and diesel, further tightening pressure on consumers and businesses across Nigeria. A top official at the refinery, who confirmed the development to our correspondent on Tuesday night, said the facility adjusted its pricing in response to prevailing international crude oil benchmarks and market realities. The new pricing template shows that petrol rose by N75 per litre to N1,275, representing an increase of about 5.02 per cent, while diesel jumped by N200 per litre to N1,950.
