Gunmen Abduct 16 Persons In Ondo, Amotekun Rescues Two Victims

Suspected gunmen have abducted at least 16 commuters on transit in Ondo State, SaharaReporters learnt on Saturday. The victims, it was gathered, included some market women, farmers, traders, and civil servants travelling for different functions in the state. They were waylaid and abducted by the gunmen on Thursday evening at a failed portion of the Ogbese area of the Akure Owo Road. Adetunji Adeleye, Commander of Amotekun Corps in the state, confirmed the abduction while speaking with SaharaReporters. Adeleye said the kidnap involved two vehicles conveying passengers heading to various parts of the state. He revealed that two out of the 16 victims had already been rescued by Amotekun, He said, “We have been able to identify one of the two persons we rescued as Alhaji Daramola, who is also a farmer from Isua Akoko Local Government Area of Ondo. Oyo Government Shuts School Over Fresh COVID-19 Case

 The Oyo State Government has shut a tertiary institution in the state following a fresh discovery of COVID-19 infection The government said its Emergency Operation Centre had already begun contact tracing to avoid the spread of the virus in the state. This was disclosed in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde. The statement reads, “The Government of Oyo State wishes to draw the attention of the public to the recent resurgence of cases of coronavirus in the state. Many of these cases were discovered in closed space settings such as offices and workplaces. “A reported case within a tertiary educational institution had also resulted in more cases being discovered through contact tracing. The state government has taken appropriate steps to lock the institution to prevent further spread and put in place other preventive measures.”

Police rescue 10 kidnapped traders in Ondo

10 out of the 16 traders who were abducted on Saturday morning November 7, along the Akure-Owo highway by unknown gunmen, have been rescued by policemen attached to the Ondo police  command.    The traders were returning from Akure where they attended the monthly meetings of Iyalaje, Iyalojas and women leaders when they were abducted. Among those abducted was Mrs Hellen Edward, the Iyaloja of Isua Akoko.   Ondo Police Command spokesperson, ASP Tee-Leo Ikoro said the 10 traders were rescued after a gun duel with their abductors. Four of the suspected kidnappers were arrested while efforts are on to rescue six other victims.    It was learnt that the abductors had already demanded N11m ransom before the gun battle.

Lawmakers who defect to another party should lose their seats - INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for prohibition of defection of lawmakers from one political party to another.    The suggestion was made on Friday November 9 in Abuja at the presentation of its ‘Report of the 2019 General Election’.   The report recommended that  “defectors should automatically lose their seats except in the case of merger of two or more parties”, and also called for amendment of the constitution to back the recommendation.    There was also a proposal for the “creation of electoral offences commission and tribunal with powers to arrest, investigate and prosecute electoral offenders; automation of the nomination process to facilitate the storage, access and retrieval of candidates’ data. Hoodlums attack market in Oyo, loot and set shops ablazec

Unknown hoodlums on Saturday, looted about 15 shops at Agbeni Ologede market in Ibadan, Oyo State capital before setting them ablaze.  The incident which occurred at about 6:00 am on Saturday, November 7, was said to have caused panic at the market and its environment as a result of exchange of fire between the personnel of Operation burst and the hoodlums The Deputy Director of Oyo State Fire Service, Moshood Adewuyi, who confirmed the incident,  disclosed that trucks taken to the scene to put out the fire were attacked by the hoodlums, while the firefighters on the peace-keeping assignment were stoned.   He added that the timely intervention of the officers and men of the operation burst later brought normalcy to the area, noting that only 10 shops were identified to have been razed while others were burnt beyond recognition.  According to Oyo Affairs correspondent, two persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The Governor of Abia state, Okezie Ikpeazu has ordered the immediate removal of the recently introduced “pandemic prevention fee" from fees students of Abia State University are expected to pay upon resumption of academic activity in the university on Monday November 9. The Governor gave the directive during a Town Hall meeting with students and management of the school on Thursday November 5, and added that his government will pay N30,000 to each Abia student in the institution as further support to them, their parents and guardians. A woman identified as Mrs Amarachi Johnson has told the Anambra State Judicial Panel investigating cases of alleged police brutality that her husband was arrested and allegedly murdered by the officers of the defunct Federal Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS), Awkuzu Unit, Anambra State in 2017.   Mrs Johnson told the panel on Thursday, November 5, that her husband, who was based in Benin Republic, was taken away by SARS officers from their residence at No1. The new lockdown comes as a second wave of COVID-19 sweeps through Europe, forcing countries such as France, Germany, Sweden and Ireland to renew strict restrictions.
