COVID-19 Spike; British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, Imposes National Lockdown Until December 2

British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has imposed a month-long lockdown in England expected to last until December 2.

The new lockdown comes as a second wave of COVID-19 sweeps through Europe, forcing countries such as France, Germany, Sweden and Ireland to renew strict restrictions.

The United Kingdom on Saturday passed one million confirmed COVID-19 cases.

The government said, “Between 31 January and 31 October 2020, there have been 1,011,660 people who have had a confirmed positive test result.”

Cases rose by 21,915 from the previous day while the death toll increased by 326, Reuters reports.

As part of the new lockdown, all shops, pubs, bars, restaurants that do not provide essential services would close and people would no longer be allowed to visit family and friends indoors.

Schools and courts would remain open.

Applicants will now get passports in two weeks - Minister of Interior

Nigeria's minister of interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has stated that Nigerians would have to wait more than two weeks for an international passport anymore.   The minister, on September 7, gave the NIS a two-week deadline to remove all passport application backlogs. He added that the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) had cleared all the 204,332 passport application backlogs. Speaking on Wednesday, October 4 in Abuja while updating Nigerians on the status of the passport backlog in the country,Tunji-Ojo said: “No one will ever wait for two weeks to get passports again. If you apply and have been captured, you will get your passport within two weeks.” He noted: “Immigration service did three shifts to make sure that we clear the backlogs and to ensure that never again in the history of Nigeria, are we going to have a backlog. Marketers demand suspension of VAT on diesel

Oil marketers have called on the Federal Government to suspend the Value Added Tax on diesel, as it would further increase the burden on Nigerians. The Chairman of the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, and Chief Executive Officer of Ardova Energy, Olumide Adeosun, made the appeal during an interactive session with journalists in Lagos on Tuesday. Senate panel to present report on Buhari’s impeachment today

The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters is expected to present its report on President Muhammadu Buhari’s impeachment on Wednesday. The committee is looking into the approval of the payment of $496m out of the Excess Crude Account for the purchase of military aircraft. The 12 Super Tucano aircraft ordered from the United States will be delivered in 2020. The Senate had on Thursday resolved to refer the matter to the committee for legal advice, when lawmakers became divided on it. The panel was given the mandate to see whether the President violated the constitution or not. Ponmo is now dangerous - FG raises alarm about a dangerous virus

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has raised an alarm of ponmo now being dangerous for Nigerians to consume following the outbreak of Anthrax in some neighbouring countries within the West African sub-region. Nigerians have been asked to desist from the consumption of hides (ponmo), smoked meat and bush meat as they pose serious risk until the situation is brought under control.
