Hubei province will lift most lockdown measures on Wednesday

China's Hubei province, ground zero for the worldwide novel coronavirus pandemic, is planning to lift nearly all lockdown restrictions across the province on Wednesday, authorities announced.
Similar measures will remain in place in Wuhan, the provincial capital, until April 8, authorities said on microblogging platform Weibo.
The mysterious illness that turned out to be Covid-19 was first reported in Wuhan in December. Authorities responded by locking down the province and forcing millions to remain indoors. 
As of the end of the day Monday, Hubei had reported 67,801 coronavirus cases and 3,160 virus-related fatalities. 
However, the rate of new infections has been brought down significantly -- the province has only reported one new infection in the past six days. 
Nearly 82,000 people across mainland China have been infected, 3,277 of whom have died. More than 73,000 have recovered and been discharged from hospital.

Missing German man's remains found in Thailand freezer

Thai authorities have found the dismembered body of a missing German businessman in a freezer. The search for Hans-Peter Mack, 62, reached a tragic end on Monday night as police located his remains in a garbage bag at a rented house in Nong Prue, a city in southern Thailand. Two German suspects have been arrested. Mack, a property broker who lived with his Thai wife in the eastern city of Pattaya, had been missing since 4 July. Police say the two suspects conspired to murder Mack, then transported and concealed his body. Mack was last seen in his Mercedes sedan in Pattaya, according to a missing-person notice put up by his family, who offered 3mn baht (£66,000; $128,000) for information on his whereabouts. 23-year-old man commits suicide in Lagos

A 23-year-old graduate of Business Administration from York University in Canada, Chinonso Anene, has allegedly committed suicide in Lagos.   According to reports, Anene reportedly locked himself inside his apartment at House 9, Emmanuel Court, Olusegun Aina Street, Parkview Estate, Ikoyi and thereafter used a pump action gun to shoot himself.    His lifeless body was discovered inside the wardrobe when police officers broke the door to his apartment. Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the state police command, SP Benjamin Huydeyin, said;   ''The DPO Ikoyi Division received a distress call from the Chief Security Officer of Parkview Estate, Mr Daramola, that Chinonso Anene has committed suicide. Based on the report, a team of detectives visited and photographed the scene, the door was forced open and one expended cartridge was recovered. Journalists arrested over "illegal" broadcast of AFCON

An Accra-based radio station was invaded by armed security operatives earlier this week for "illegal" broadcast of the African Cup of Nations.   It was reported that the police officers in Ghana first tried arresting the station’s news anchor Nana Ama Agyarko for what they described as obstruction of their work and abuse of a police officer.  Class FM reported that after failing to apprehend the female newscaster, the station’s Drivetime host, Docta Kay, was arrested by armed policemen who claimed he also obstructed them from doing their job.  The arrest was effected after three plain-clothed men claiming to be police officers, along with five others claiming to be GBC staff, walked into Accra100.5FM and demanded the station’s permission to broadcast the ongoing AFCON matches.  The men claimed that the station had no right to broadcast the games. Fuel smuggling persists in borders despite subsidy removal – Customs boss

The Acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, on Monday, vowed a heavy clampdown on oil thieves, insisting that the nation cannot “afford to let saboteurs take over our economy.” Adeniyi, who said there were still cases of smuggling of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, at Nigeria’s border stations despite the removal of subsidy on the commodity, said the agency had adopted new border patrol strategies to close in on oil thieves.
