Nurse arraigned in court for using name of ICU patient to steal drugs worth Ksh81K (N295k)

Joseph Onyango Joel Migundo, a 53-year-old nurse at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has been arraigned in court after being caught using the name of a patient in coma to steal medicine at the hospital for three months.

Migundo who was arraigned before Milimani Law Courts, was accused of committing the crime on diverse dates between October 2, 2021, and December 9, 2021, at the hospital.

The nurse allegedly stole 12 bottles of Human Albumin Solution all valued at Ksh 81,600 (N295k).

He is also facing an alternative charge of handling stolen property, after being found in possession of four bottles of the said drugs on December 9, 2021, during an ambush that was carried out by the hospital’s staff.

Court documents seen by K24 Digital revealed that security personnel at KNH received intelligence from an insider that the nurse was stealing drugs from the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

An "ambush" laid, established that the accused was adding a specific drug to a prescription of a patient who is in a coma at the hospital.

The police report read;

“When the medicines are dispatched from the pharmacy, the accused stole them since they were not prescribed to the patient as per the treatment sheet."

The nurse however pleaded not guilty before Nairobi Senior Principal magistrate Bernard Ochoi, and was released on a cash bail of Ksh50,000.
