Super Eagles and Genk striker,  Paul Onuachu has been named the winner of the 2021 Belgian Golden Shoe award, becoming the first-ever Nigerian and the fourth African to claim the prestigious honour.

The 27-year-old claimed the award on Wednesday night after scoring an incredible 29 league goals over the entire 2020-21 season and adding another 12 in the first half of the current campaign.  Onuachu gathered 333 votes to beat the Club Brugge duo of Noa Lang (272 votes) and Charles De Ketelaere (271 votes) to second and third, respectively.

Three Africans, Ivory Coast’s Aruna Dindane in 2003, Morocco’s Mbark Boussoufa twice in 2006 and 2010, and Democratic Republic of Congo’s Dieumerci Mbokani in 2012, had previously won the award.

Last year, Onuachu finished in third place in the running for the Golden Shoe, coming behind winner Israeli star Lior Refaelov and second-placed Raphael Holzhauser.

 The win on Wednesday night, also saw him become the third Genk player in history to be named Belgium’s best and the first in 20 years.

 The former Midtjylland star is currently recovering from an injury that kept him out of the Nigerian squad to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Angry Youths burn police officer’s residence in Edo

Some youths in Evbuomama community in Ikpoba-Okah Local Government Area of Edo have set ablaze the residence of a police officer following the death of one, Glory Imarogie. The  News Agency of Nigeria  reports that the deceased was said to have died in a hospital after he was allegedly tortured at the Edo Police headquarters. He was said to have been arrested after he had an altercation with his landlord, a serving police officer, SP Austin Ehiziegbe. His landlord was said to have been annoyed because late Glory’s niece celebrated her birthday at his residence without his permission. Family demands justice as power-drunk vigilantes shoot Abuja orphans

The family of two brothers, Abdulmalik Abubakar and Ibrahim Abdullahi, have demanded justice after members of a vigilance group shot them in the Bobota/Dabi Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory. PUNCH Metro  gathered that the brothers were sleeping in their room on Sunday, July 9 when members of the vigilance group invaded the premises and suddenly started shooting. It was learnt that one of the bullets hit the two brothers in the leg and buttocks and in a bid to rescue them, the duo were rushed to the hospital for treatment. In a video made available to our correspondent, one of the brothers, Abdulmalik, while writhing in pain on the hospital bed, said he was shot because he refused to give members of the vigilance group his phone. Everton have sacked manager Rafael Benitez after just six-and-a-half months in charge following Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Norwich.  The Toffees have won just once in the Premier League since September and are 15th in the table, six points above the relegation zone and on January 15 lost to lowly ranked Norwich.  Benitez, a former manager of Liverpool (Everton's city rivals) was appointed Everton boss last summer but the Spaniard has failed to win over the Goodison Park faithful with his style of football or results.
