Gun-wielding hoodlums kidnap Ebonyi Catholic priest, three others

Gunmen, on Monday, kidnapped a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Joseph Azubuike, and three yet-to-be-identified persons in Ebonyi State.

Azubuike is the Parish priest of St. Charles Parish, Mgbaleze village, Isu community, in the Onicha Local Government Area of the state.

The Chancellor of the Abakaliki Diocese, Rev Father Mathew Opoke, while confirming the incident in a statement on Tuesday, said Azubuike was kidnapped close to his parish while returning from evangelical duties.

Opoke revealed the kidnappers had established contact with the Diocese and demanded an undisclosed amount of ransom.

The statement read in part, “Kindly pray for the unconditional release of Very Rev. Fr. Joseph Azubuike, who was abducted on Monday, July 10, 2023, close to his parish on his way back from pastoral duties.

“He was abducted alongside three other people. The abductors are making financial demands but with your prayers, we are going to have them back unconditionally.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, said the command had received a report of the kidnap and that investigation was ongoing.

JUST IN: Supreme Court fixes April 22 for hearing of PDP appeals

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has fixed April 22 for the hearing of appeals arising from the leadership crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party. The appeals were filed by a faction of the party led by former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, challenging earlier judgments of the Court of Appeal delivered on March 9. A five-member panel of the apex court, headed by Justice Mohammed Garba, fixed the date on Tuesday after granting an application for accelerated hearing. NLC protests Tinubu’s N500bn subsidy palliative, demands 300% pay rise

The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have thumbed down the N500bn palliative proposed by President Bola Tinubu, stating that it is grossly inadequate to assuage the hardships confronting workers sequel to the fuel subsidy removal. They are demanding a 300 per cent salary increase to enable workers to cope with the challenges imposed by the deteriorating economic situation that came with the removal of the controversial fuel subsidy. On Wednesday, the President wrote to the House of Representatives seeking approval for N500bn to cushion the effects of petrol subsidy removal.
