New ICAN president plans reforms

Nigerian accountants must develop their career to remain relevant in the global space, the President, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Dr Innocent Okwuosa has said.

In a statement, Okwuosa said this during an interactive session with journalists in his office in Lagos.

He said his tenure as the president of ICAN would embark on expected reforms in the foremost accountancy professional body, ranging from membership engagement to exposing chartered accountants in Nigeria to digital accountancy, which was gaining traction globally.

Okwuosa noted the profession had reached a global stage that had gone beyond profit maximisation.


He said accounting had changed in terms of what the business community and the world expected accountants to do.

According to him, “The reforms we expect, I would say, are endless. But I would try and articulate a few of them. Chartered accountants are expected to operate in a digital world.

“We have been talking about accountants getting technologically involved in what they do and using technology to enhance their practice. But there are no concrete actions as regards how this is going to be done. Accounting has changed in terms of what the business community and the world expect accountants to do.”

Police smash robbery syndicate, recover 450 motorcycles in Imo

The Imo State Police Command has smashed an armed robbery syndicate that specialised in the robbery of motorbikes and vehicles, as well as attempted murder. Already, five suspects have been arrested for their different roles in the robbery syndicate. The police spokesperson for the Imo State Command, Henry Okoye, made the disclosure on Sunday while addressing journalists at the Police headquarters in Owerri. He disclosed that the suspects attempted to bribe police operatives with the sum of ₦5 million to evade arrest, but the offer was rejected. Macao A Town In South China Is Banning Entry To Most non-residents

      Macao, a town in South China will ban most non-residents from entering the semiautonomous Chinese territory starting tomorrow, the city's leader said at a news conference Tuesday. All foreign nationals will be denied entry into the city, Chief Executive Ho Iat-seng said.  Visitors from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan who have not traveled to foreign countries can enter the city, but they will be required to undergo medical observation for 14 days. Macao residents who are returning from overseas will be required to undergo medical observation for 14 days, Ho said. The gambling mecca is one of Asia's most popular tourist destinations. Its economy is heavily reliant on gaming and tourist revenues, which have been severely impacted by coronavirus-related travel restrictions. Twenty-five people in the city have contracted the virus, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University, 10 of whom have recovered.

ASUU Calls Off Strike As FG Reaches Agreement With ASUU, Releases N15.4bn

The Federal Government has reached an agreement with members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Addressing journalists on Monday evening after the meeting with the striking lecturers in Abuja, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, said the majority of their demands have been met including the release of N15.4 billion for payment of salary shortfalls.  According to him, the Federal Government is also in the process of releasing another N20 billion for payment of earned allowances for university lecturers. Meanwhile, the ASUU President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, said the National Executive Committee of the union will review their decisions based on the new commitment by the government.
