Trial of police officer accused of killing lawyer Bolanle Raheem begins as family prepare to lay her to rest

The trial of Assistant Superintendent of Police [ASP], Drambi Vandi, alleged to have killed Lagos-based lawyer, Bolanle Raheem, on Christmas Day, December 25, 2022, will commence at the Lagos State High Court today, January 16.

 

Vandi who is attached to the Ajiwe Police Station in Ajah, Lagos State, allegedly shot Raheem while she was returning from an outing with her family members.

 

A statement by the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), said the trial would be before Justice I.O. Harrison at the Tafawa Balewa Square.

 

“The trial of ASP Vandi who allegedly killed Raheem on December 25, 2022, on the Ajah Expressway, will begin before Justice I.O. Harrison at the Lagos High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS).”

 

Vandi appeared before Chief Magistrate C.A. Adedayo on December 30, 2022, a day after the Police Service Commission (PSC) approved his suspension. The Magistrate ordered that he be remanded at the Ikoyi custodial facility pending advice of the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions.

 

He will be tried under Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

 

Meanwhile, the remains of the late Lawyer will be laid to rest on Tuesday, January 17 in Lagos. A service of songs will be held in her honor at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Olive Tree Parish, today, January 16. Until her passing, late Bolanle was a dedicated Sunday School teacher in her church.

Stop $5bn annual freight to foreigners, LCCI tells FG

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the President, Bola Tinubu, to stop the revenue leakage of more than $5bn paid annually as freight to foreign shipowners. LCCI in a position paper on current matters of national economic developments signed by its president, Dr Michael Olawale-Cole, obtained by the PUNCH, said the move would help to address revenue leakages. The LCCI also frowned at the recent bid by the Federal Government to merge the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Federal Inland Revenue Service, and Nigeria Customs Services into the Nigerian Revenue Services. A 27-year-old man has gone viral after complaining that he can’t get job because he looks like a child. 20-year-old UNILORIN student commits suicide after ‘online lover’ absconded with N500,000 she lent him for his mother's 'breast cancer treatment'

A 20-year-old student of the University of Ilorin, Sanni Hameedat, reportedly committed suicide after lending a boy she met on the social media platform, Snapchat, the sum of N500,000.   Rubiks, the private hostel management she resided in before her death confirmed the incident to  Punch  in a statement on Wednesday, October 18, 2023.    According to the management, Hameedat was undergoing her SIWES programme before the incident happened.   The management asserted that the cause of her death was not unrelated to the pressure from the app agents, who were demanding fast repayment, coupled with her brother’s inability to assist her financially, which led to depression.    “The cause of suicide was traced to financial misappropriation.
